Archiving

All issues and articles published by the journal will be archived in the long term by African Journals Online (AJOL) in South Africa. AJOL also works with several other organisations for long-term archiving purposes. 

Aim and Scope

Ezumezu: African Perspectives on Logic, Transhumanism and AI Ethics was founded in January 2024 to promote studies in African logic and African perspectives on transhumanism and AI Ethics, as part of African contributions to world knowledge. It honours the contributions of African thinkers such as Meinrad Hebga, Leopold Senghor, Campbell Momoh, Godwin Sogolo, Chris Ijiomah, Uduma Uduma, Akin Makinde, Udo Etuk, Innocent Asouzu, and Jonathan Chimakonam, to name a few. The aim is to make it a world-class academic journal, publishing high-quality articles that engage deeply with existing and new ideas, with the goals of reclaiming, correcting and promoting African narratives, and building accurate logical frameworks for African scholarship.

Editorial/Review Process

This journal operates three layers of review: one editorial review and a double-blind peer-review process, in which two anonymous reviewers assess anonymised manuscripts. Authors should expect the Editor to reach (and inform them of) a decision, including recommending corrections, if any, or acceptance/rejection of any manuscript within three months of receipt. It is important to note that Editors are not committed to the views expressed in articles. Authors must take the time to proofread their works. Poorly written and incoherent articles would be summarily rejected during Editorial review. Where an editor judges a manuscript to be of high quality after editorial review, one blind review only may be carried out. Only manuscripts that meet the required standard would move on to the peer review stage.

Authorship/co-authorship Criteria

An author is one who produces a manuscript that follows all standards of manuscript production, including referencing, citations, quotations, consultations, interviews, reviews, discussions, argumentation, articulation, speculation, critical engagement, etc. Such a person would be able to claim originality for the work and must not have plagiarised another author. A co-author is one who has participated in research and produced a work in accordance with all research standards.

Publication Ethics Statement

The journal strongly opposes all forms of publication malpractices and complies with the code of ethical publishing as set out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). This involves manuscript submission, processing, publication, and issues concerning research ethics and conflict of interest, etc.

Authors are required to declare any and all possible conflicts of interest/competing interests cases. Complaints, allegations and appeals are handled deftly by giving all parties a chance to present their case and supporting evidence before a decision is made by the editorial board. All complaints and appeals are to be sent to ezumezu@cspafrica.org.

The journal’s policies on data sharing and reproducibility align with the current COPI Act on publishing. The journal also asserts and maintains authors’ intellectual property rights to their essays. The journal’s option for post-publication discussions, corrections and ethical oversights is a peaceful process until consensus is arrived at. This may be carried out through email exchanges or Zoom meetings, where necessary. All ethical and malpractice cases are to be reported to the journal at ezumezu@cspafrica.org.  Issues concerning corrections and post-publication discussions are to be channelled to the editor at ezumezu@cspafrica.org.

Plagiarism Policy

Manuscripts submitted to this journal are subjected to routine plagiarism screening using the Grammarly software. An acceptable percentage is below 10%, but should ideally be less than 5 %. Authors should submit an anonymised version of their article as well as a separate title page that includes the title of their article, their names, email address, ORCID number, and University affiliation, in that order.

Statement of Peer Review

Articles submitted to this journal undergo external double-blind review (and, in rare cases, single-blind review) after a satisfactory internal editorial review. The Editor makes final decisions based on their own views on manuscript quality and peer review reports.

AI Policy

• Research and Manuscript preparation: Ezumezu: African Perspectives on Logic, Transhumanism and AI Ethics does not accept works written or generated, in whole or in part, using any AI tools or Large Language Models (LLMs). While authors may use such tools to edit their manuscripts, including polishing grammar, they must not be used to generate any content or images in the work. If they are deployed for purposes beyond copyediting, the author must report such use to the editor, indicating the AI tool used and the extent of its application.
• Peer Review: Reviewers are advised not to use Generative AI or AI-assisted tools when reviewing a manuscript to safeguard the author’s confidentiality and privacy and to comply with copyright and data security laws. This also applies to the peer review report. In other words, neither a manuscript nor its peer review report should be uploaded, in whole or in part, to any AI system for any purpose whatsoever.

Copyright Terms/Licensing Terms

Ezumezu: African Perspectives on Logic, Transhumanism and AI Ethics uses the Creative Commons Licence (CC BY-NC-ND). This licence “allows reusers to copy and distribute the material in any medium or format in unadapted form only, for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator”. Authors are allowed to reprint their work elsewhere insofar as proper acknowledgement is given to the journal, and permission is granted by the Editor of the Journal.

Ezumezu: African Perspectives on Logic, Transhumanism and AI is fully Diamond Open Access and publishes free of charge.

Note to Contributors

Ezumezu: African Perspectives on Logic, Transhumanism and AI Ethics is an interdisciplinary and decolonial journal dedicated to the publication of well-researched articles, primarily of the qualitative type but not excluding its quantitative variant. Our goal is to create a platform on which scholars can engage with the ideas of their colleagues. Thus, our main audience would be researchers and practitioners of philosophy, generally speaking, and African philosophy and other related fields in the humanities and the social sciences in particular. In this regard, articles submitted to Ezumezu: African Perspectives on Logic, Transhumanism and AI Ethics must be presented in the conversational style. We publish one issue per year on a rolling basis. Submissions may include original articles (full-length articles that propose a new/novel idea, build on an existing system, or extend existing arguments); conversations (shorter essays that aim to deconstruct and reconstruct an idea in a previously published essay); and book reviews (mainly focused on contemporary literature in African philosophy and studies).

Open Access Statement

Articles published in Ezumezu are “Diamond Open Access”. Users are permitted to read, download, copy, distribute or use journal articles for any other lawful purposes. Users do not need to register on the journal’s website to access the published articles. While we are committed to keeping our articles “open access”, reprinting of articles published in the journal must be done with permission from the Editor and with due acknowledgements. Articles will be available on the journal page of our website at https://cspafrica.org/ezumezu-issues/. Also, authors are permitted to upload the off-print of their published articles to their institutional repository or other repository of their choice for educational purposes.

Referencing Style

Authors are expected to format their manuscript as directed in the CSP reference style. We do not accept endnotes. Footnotes may be used sparingly.

Authors are expected to STRICTLY follow the CSP referencing style (you can download the CSP reference style at the bottom of the page).

Instructions for Authors

All manuscripts (in English) must be original (neither plagiarised nor under consideration elsewhere) and submitted to the editor in MS Word format via e-mail: ezumezu@cspafrica.org. While English is the preferred language for publication, we understand that authors may use certain non-English phrases. Where such is the case, English translations in footnotes or in parentheses are usually required.

Full original articles are expected to be between 4000 – 6000 words (exceptions may be made where absolutely necessary). Short conversations can be between 2000-4000 words. A concise title (20 words max.) and a 150-200 word abstract are required for both.
